Who was the wag who said, "Keep your eye upon the doughnut and not upon the hole"? At the corner of Fredrick and Stanyan in the Haight Ashbury, in the Doughnut Shop, crullers burbled in hot oil, soon to be sugared for stoned hippies and fat Hells Angels. It was the only doughnut shop in the city that was not a hangout for cops.
