Chained
i've recently been listening to Alice in Chains for the first time, based on my roommate, Ankur's recommendation. i like what i've been hearing so far of "Jar of Flies" and "Unplugged." the band achieves a very dark sound and mood with down tunings and lower harmonies, yet they're not lacking in melody and hooks - quite the contrary. Jerry Cantrell's guitar work is excellent, and his melodic leads balance out the haunting, almost dirge-like vocals of Layne Staley. i'm looking forward to hearing "Dirt."
Hero's Ladder
i saw two movies this weekend so far - one in the theatre (Hero), and one on VHS (Jacob's Ladder). i went into "Hero" expecting "Crouching Tiger" redux, and it was difficult to leave that expectation at home, especially once the flying battle sequences began. but as the movie progressed, it began to develop a beauty of its own. "Hero" is a visually stunning movie, using bold colors as well as the lack of color to great effect. fight scenes are well-choreographed, and take place in the anti-gravity universe made so popular by "Crouching Tiger" and "The Matrix." additionally, the plot/story is quite good, and the moral lessons and understated romance almost hold their own with the visuals. this is definitely a movie worth going to the theatre for.
if i'm feeling ambitious, i'll write my piece on Jacob's Ladder later...
