Squeeze & Cheap Trick

I saw Squeeze and Cheap Trick this past Sunday. I didn't know many of either bands' songs beyond their hit singles. Cheap Trick's sound was disappointing. The mix was extremely muddled, and pretty much all of Robin Zander's vocals were unintelligable. I expect more from a veteran band. Lead guitarist Rick Neilsen put on an entertaining show, however.

I knew even less Squeeze tunes than Cheap Trick tunes going in - pretty much all I thought I knew was "Tempted," but their performance was impressive, and honestly quite refreshing after Cheap Trick's set. Their songs were extremely tight and catchy, and Glenn Tilbrook's vocals were top-notch. And I was pleasantly surprised to discover that they sang one of my favorite songs from the 80s, "Hourglass." It's got a mouthful of a chorus that's a ball to sing along to.

Getting Funkadelic

I never had given the whole Funkadelic/Parliament thing much thought before. Sure, I knew the “We Got the Funk” vibe, but that was about it. However, after seeing a DJ spin some old-school soul and R&B 45s with some cool drum breaks, I got to wondering if any of them were from the George Clinton tree.

So I checked out a few
Funkadelic tunes, and I discovered some amazing solo guitar work coming down from the Mothership. I had no idea! Their first lead guitarist, Eddie Hazel, could tear the roof off the place. Check out his absolutely scorching leadwork on the funky “Get Off Your Ass and Jam,” as well as his psychedelic mind-blowing solo that is “Maggot Brain.” Hearing this stuff for the first time absolutely made my week.
