Thievery Corporation - "Warning Shots"

Just got back from a barbecue where there was a bunch of Thievery Coporation playing in the background. So I was curious to see what was out there on YouTube for those DC guys, and now I'm chilling to "Warning Shots." It's got a nice hypnotic groove to it.

2009 US Air Guitar Championships Regionals 5/29

Been playing a lot of Guitar Hero recently, minus the plastic guitar?  Perhaps you’re ready for the 2009 US Air Guitar Championships Regional Competition this Friday, May 29th at the 9:30 Club.  For 15 bucks you can watch this area’s best oxygen shredders face-off for the right to represent DC in the national championships.  The national champ heads to Finland, home of Nordic death metal, and men with long beards, to compete for the world championships.

"What'cha Want?" - Live

Check out the Beasties rocking "What'cha Want" live on Jimmy Fallon on Monday night w/ The Roots getting ultra-funky as the back-up band. Nice. Thanks to Ickmusic for the recommendation.

"New" Camera

While in Berkeley Springs (WV) this weekend w/ CC, an antique Kodak Premo #2 (1919-1926) folding camera similar to the one pictured above caught my eye in an antique shop. I loved the old-school style bellows and the detail of the lens-piece. And best of all, it didn't cost very much. So consequently, now *I've* got it on display. You can check out some other cameras from the Kodak folding series over here.

The Winter Sounds and Jukebox the Ghost @ Rock & Roll Hotel 5/23

There’s a good three-band show going on this Saturday, May 23rd over at the Rock and Roll Hotel. The Winter Sounds (above) kick things off with an expansive melodic indie-pop sound, complete with soaring lead vocals that have a vaguely British sound – at times almost sounding like a british indie version of the Beach Boys, at least on their recordings.

Singer/songwriter Jenny Owen Youngs from Montclair, NJ will be bringing her folky, Feist-y groove to the stage second.

And then local favorites Jukebox The Ghost will be closing out the night with their catchy brand of piano pop.

Glee - "Don't Stop Believin'"

In case you had to hear/see that glee club version of Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'" from tonight's episode of Fox's new show Glee, go right ahead. The video is a tad out of synch, however...

Hotspur's "Chandelier" Video

"Chandelier"

Local power-poppers Hotspur have got a new album You Should Know Better By Now dropping June 23rd, but in the meantime, they just released a video for the first single, "Chandelier." Take a peek.

Back Door Slam

I’m pretty psyched that Back Door Slam will be coming to town (the Birchmere) in August, so I’ll be able to get my guitar fix. Lead singer/guitarist Davy Knowles, young though he may be, is one singularly talented cat, with mad blues guitar chops and vocals beyond his years – a combination of talents that’s a bit SRV-esque.

Tereu Tereu / CD Release 5/19 @ DC9

These kids from Fredericksburg, VA have been busy, and are ready to drop their full-length debut, All That Keeps Us Together this Tuesday, May 19th at DC9. Tereu Tereu’s noisy indie-pop is sneakily catchy, and they aren’t afraid to blend different sonic elements together (like trumpet). But most importantly, they can bring it live, thanks to Ryan Little’s earnest, almost fragile, vocals, and a pulsing rhythm section.

Cat Playing The Keyboard

I just saw this video of a cat playing the keyboard on The Soup. It just cracked me up, so I couldn't resist posting it.

30 Rock / "Kidney Now"

30 Rock had a bunch of guest star musicians on last night performing a mock "We Are The World"-type number to obtain a kidney for Jack's newly discovered father. Mary J. Blige, Elvis Costello, Sheryl Crow, Moby and many others were there to "show their support." See who else you can recognize...

Leonard Cohen / "In My Secret Life"

Leonard Cohen has been on tour this year, after having lost quite a bit of his funds. My friend Alice wrote up a beautiful review of his Monday night show-in-the-pouring rain at Merriweather Post over at MetroMusicScene.com here. I actually don't know many Cohen songs, but here he is at the Beacon Theatre earlier this year playing one of the few I do know, the achingly gorgeous "In My Secret Life."

Sixto Rodriguez @ Rock & Roll Hotel 5/13

Catch the psych-folk sounds of Sixto Rodriguez at the Rock & Roll HotelBold this Wednesday, May 13th, as he tours to support the reissue of his 1971 album Coming From Reality. A lost classic? You can decide for yourself. But these two tracks from it groove quite heartily, complete with some strong cool vocals from Rodriguez.

Jeffrey Foucault

I had never heard of Midwestern singer/songwriter Jeffrey Foucault until someone at work from Chicago recommended him to me. And I’m glad she did. I’m really digging the tracks off of his most recent album of original material, Ghost Repeater. It’s got an Americana flavor to it, and supposedly it’s his most polished-sounding album. The catchy mid-tempo “Ghost Repeater” caught my attention first, but I’ve since become addicted by the beautiful harmonies (by Kris Delmhorst) and pedal steel of the gorgeous “One Part Love.”
