All You Winos...

here's a quick summary on wine. how to drink it, how to choose it, etc.

Pizza Pizza

i had a bout with double vision driving to work today. but i was able to restore single vision by closing one eye. so that guy you saw winking as he drove by you just might have been me.
Bang

it's always comforting when when someone gets shot a few blocks from one's apartment. here's a brief excerpt from the Washington Post:

A young African American man was shot and killed in a pre-dawn shooting in Crystal City today, Arlington police said. Police received numerous calls at about 5:00 a.m., reporting multiple gunshots in the 2000 block of Jefferson Davis Highway near the Hampton Inn, according to Arlington County Police Det. Rick Rodriguez.

thanks to CC for the warning
Why?

ohmygosh, i hate Rod Stewart!!! why can't he just shut up! "standards again?" shut up or rock, i say!!!!!

Sleep It Off

i don't get enough sleep. i'd like to. but getting up at 6:00 just doesn't make it very easy. this article tells us all of the good things about getting enough sleep, as well as all of the bad things about not getting enough time in the sack. of course, this article apparently lives in some perfect world where we all have time to do anything we want, like sleep 10 hours a night. so after reading this, i'll worry a bit, tell myself to get more sleep, then end up going to bed late and getting up early.
Here Comes Tyson

The new wing of Tysons Corner Mall is slated to open this Friday. Five new restaurants, another food court, 24 new stores, a 16-screen movie theatre, and even more traffic will be waiting for you, shoppers!
Scientific

i know i probably posted this link before, but i really love the video for Coldplay's "The Scientist." it's a wonderful combination of visual w/ audio. so watch it again for the first time.

One More For The Road

all right, blogger's acting screwy, but i'll try one last post for the evening. i'd really like to play some guitar, but it's got a busted string, and i have no desire to restring something tonight. anyway, take a listen to Schuyler Fisk's song "songs that say goodbye" on her myspace site. it's a pretty little acoustic song, w/ beautiful vocals.

thanks to Josh Radin for the tip
Butchie's Comin' To Town

i'm pretty excited about this. forget that, i'm very excited about this! Butch Walker's playing the Black Cat November 3rd.

"My Way" - Butch Walker
New Amsterdams

The New Amsterdams have released a 5-song EP, Killed or Cured, as an free online download. they're mellow little gems of songs. and in case you're wondering, my personal favorites are "strangled by the thought," and "wears so thin."
MP3 Sunday

what's that? what's that you say? it's sunday? then it's time to go out and play this mp3 by california-based Speechwriters LLC. its acoustified bounciness bursts into a sweet grandiose chorus w/ tight harmonies...taste it.

Pennsylvania

cc and i just got back from a restful visit to Central Pennsylvania, staying at The Inn at New Berlin. it's so see fields and barns every once in awhile! beautiful country. and we got to hang out some at my alma mater (that sounds weird), Bucknell, and look at all the new buildings, purchase some emblazoned clothing, and see just how young the students look these days.

Who You Gonna Be?

just in case you really like Randy Moss - i mean really, really like Randy Moss - you can now be him from his tip of his chin to the top of his Afro. Randy Moss is now offering masks of, well, himself on his website.
Wash Up

and people thought i was crazy for always opening bathroom doors w/ a paper towel...

American Society of Microbiology researchers have been doing some spying on who does and who doesn't wash their hands around the country:
  • The worst hygiene was at Atlanta's Turner Field baseball stadium, where 37 percent of men left the bathroom without washing, and 16 percent of the women did.
  • New York's Penn Station had the biggest gender disparity, where 64 percent of men washed their hands compared with 92 percent of women. Grand Central Station was almost as bad.
  • The best hygiene was at San Francisco's Ferry Terminal Farmers Market and Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry and Shedd Aquarium, where only about 12 percent of people left without washing.

High On Air

a television presenter on a new Dutch talk show plans to take heroin and other illegal drugs on air in a program intended to reach young audiences on topics that touch their lives, producers said Wednesday. the presenter is planning on smoking a heroin pill - i think it would be cooler if he shot up on air.
The Warhol Cometh

do you like Andy Warhol enough to leave your house for more than an hour? then go to the Corcoran sometime between September 24th and February 20th and catch their Andy Warhol exhibit. i think i'd like to see this. and i figure if Mao is good enough for Mike Tyson's bicep, he's good enough to grace my blog.

thanks to Seeking Irony for the tip

Elise
did i mention that i saw a Lotus Elise on the road the other day? very cool!
Back To The 80s

i was driving down Rt. 66 on the way to the hospital today, and i popped in my Poison's Greatest Hits CD that i just burned from cc (that's christine, not DeVille). as soon as i heard the opening chords of "Nothin' But A Good Time," a huge grin spread over my face, and i rocked the whole way to my blood draw.

Star-Seeker

man, i called that bush-clinton katrina fund during monday night football hoping to speak to Gale Sayers, John Elway, Marcus Allen, Donovan McNabb - or even Tony Danza!!!! but all i got was a recording of Peyton Manning and Michael Vick, and some chick taking my pledge. foiled again!

Locally-Speaking

firstly, if you didn't know, Mike Holden, the "Czar of Arlington," has released a new EP, Level, and it'll be coming soon to stores near you. he got to work with some cool individuals in the recording process, like producer Ted Comerford (Virginia Coalition) and mixer Mitch Easter (R.E.M.). take a listen to the first track here. Mike's done alot for the music scene here in Arlington (he's the founder of AMS), and I hope it does well!

secondly, local arlington hangout, Dr. Dremo's, is in danger of being demolished to make way for a 10-story building as part of Arlington's stealthy "Project Gentrification." i don't go there very much anymore, but it's a cool place to hang out and go play an open mic night. and it's got a whole bunch of beers. anyway, it's quirky, and it gives some character to a downtown area that's rapidly losing its identity to pottery barns and 10-story buildings.

Would You Trust This Man?

every B-list celebrity has their own TV show these days, so why not give Mr. T one? be on the lookout for "Pity the Fool," where the Mohawked One dishes out motivational advice to people in tough situations. so who needs Oprah? i just wonder if the guests on his first show will be Murdock and Face.
Another One Of Those Funny Signs Collections

here's a little sign humor for those of you stuck at the office on a Monday morning...

thanks to LeeHead for the tip...
MP3 Sunday?

aight, i was going to do "mp3 mondays" on the blog, but i kept jumping the gun and posting them on sundays. so i figure i'll just change it to "MP3 Sunday." gee, that was easy.

so i give you Marah's jangly rocker, "Demon of White Sadness." it's the first cut from their upcoming October album If You Didn't Laugh, You'd Cry, and i can't wait to spend my dinero on it. i really hope they make a stop in Arlington, VA on their current tour...they put on one kick-ass live show, and they're not to be missed.

thanks to Bars & Guitars for posting the track...

Almost Time

aight, it's almost time for bed. i've had enough sniffling and coughing for one day - i just downed my final CVS Cough & Cold pill for the night - they're not non-drowsy, baby, so hopefully i'll soon be snoozing and breathing through my nose. it's the little things. i just gotta finish watching the video for Beck's "Loser."

One Pic

while i'm at home sniffling, overheating and being sore, i give you a picture of two of my favorite editors. i didn't take it, but i did stick a few effects on it...
I Think We're Gonna Need Another Box

can someone please go get me some more Puffs Plus w/ Lotion? sniff.
Zonked

i was awake pretty much most of the night with aches, chills and possibly fever, and for some reason, my nose was so stuffed i couldn't breathe through it. so my throat is pretty dry and harsh. usually, sleep restores me, so without a good night of it, i'm still feeling like shiznit. i'm staying home today, so hopefully, i'll be able to get some zzzz's this morning and recharge.

New Civics

honda continues to drag its bread-and-butter to the gutter, at least styling-wise. the new 2006 civics are not going to be winning any beauty contests. apparently big H is taking a cue from BMW and brandishing the ugly stick on their best-selling models.
Lips

could Rolling Stone actually give The Rolling Stones' new album a bad review? looks like we won't get a chance to see, cus they're quite complimentary on the new one. isn't there some sort of conflict of interest thing going on here?

Wanna Cookie?

gingerbread is naughtified in the "specialty cookbook," The Cookie Sutra...it almost makes you want to bake, eh?

thanks to Davezilla for the tip

Huh?

with the proliferation of headphones (thanks to iPods), many younger people are causing damage to their hearing - this article discusses the potential damage that can be done by the increased usage of earplugs with increased volume levels.
Ice Cream?

this picture i took in an old town ice cream parlor makes me dizzy. i guess having shaky hands can do that. sugar cone, anyone?

MP3 Monday

it's the second weekly "MP3 Monday." does that mean it's become a hallowed tradition, or will this fade out over time? i have no idea. anyway, your MP3 fix of the week is The Pernice Brother's "Weaker Shade of Blue." it's a shining little pop creation (i seem to be into those as of late), with a lot of "ahhh" backing vox and shiznit. some of you will dig it, some of you may not. but all of you came here looking for something!

Vertical or Horizontal?

are you tired of buying corduroy pants with stripes running vertically down your legs? desperate for a pair of 'roys with horizontal stripes running around your legs? so get up onto your swish-swishing legs and go to cordarounds.com.
FINALLY! it's opening Sunday for the NFL, kids!

The Fest

i just got back from the Alexandria Festival of the Arts w/ CC - it was a pretty cool art festival in downtown old town alexandria - many different artists had booths set up, selling framed art for big prices...they gotta eat, right? anyway, i ended up buying a matted photograph from some dude from philly for a reasonable price, and a button-down blue shirt from the gap outlet (it was on sale) - so what more can you ask for?

Rock

damn, that was one fine show. one of the best i've ever been to at IOTA - and the best IOTA show that CC has ever seen. the opening act was a pleasant surprise - the band Plumb (named after the female lead singer) did the Evanescence thing, complete with Plumb's kick-ass vocals. she's one of the best vocalists i've heard live in a long time. good mix, and the keys added nice body and warmth to the rock.

and as for Angie Aparo....he's a bit nuts. his in-between song banter is quite zany. but the guy can sing like a muther-effer. he just opens his mouth, and this huge voice leaps out. he's soooo good. excellent set, with percussionist and another guitarist - even without a huge band, he still gets a big sound. his CD, "The American," is one of my favorite CDs of all time...

Quick On The Draw

they're squirrels! they're zombies! they're zombie squirrels! kill them before they kill you!
I Was Gonna Put This On Postsecret.com, But...

have i ever told you how much i love coming home early and watching Beverly Hills 90210? and i was just rocking out to "If I Could Turn Back Time" in my car on my way to the ATM. i'm so glad i got all that off of my chest!
My Favorite Toys

some of my favorite toys as a kid were legos. i spent tons of hours building spaceships and other vehicles of those crazy blocks! founded in 1932, Lego's name was invented by combining the first two letters of the Danish words "Leg godt" (play well) without knowing that that the word in Latin means "I assemble." anyway, for what it's worth, Lego Group said Wednesday it is considering moving all or parts of its production to Eastern Europe or China.

As If...

as if cell phones didn't already make enough noise, Apple has unveiled their iTunes cell phone. i still haven't succumbed to iTunes. no iPod, no nothing. i'm not big on headphones.

The Greatest

a tip of the hat to Jerry Rice, the greatest receiver of all time, on his retirement day. the three greatest players i've ever seen? Joe Montanta, Jerry Rice, Barry Sanders. yeah, i was sorely tempted to include my favorite player, Emmitt Smith, but let's just say he's fourth, ok?
Happy Halloween!

i think i just found this year's halloween costume...
Only Mike & Lenny Are Laboring

oh, it's labor day, kids, and it's time for a Law & Order marathon! i sooooo love it! i just changed the backgrounds of our band webpage and credits ( jeter ), so quick go and check it out so you can tell me just how good it looks. or you can bitch at me and tell me how the colors clash. anyway, i picked up my mail this morning, and i got my VA property tax bill, which is essentially tax on my car. each year i hear that the car tax is going to go away, and each year i end up paying the man in october. stupid car tax.
New Marah

one of my favorite bands, Marah, is releasing a new CD in october! awwwww yeah! i just hope they come back and rock arlington in the next couple of months...

thanks to Dan for the tip

MP3 Monday

i declare this and all future Mondays on my blog to be "MP3 Monday." damn, it's good to be king of your own blogging castle. and yeah, i know, it's not as cool as "Middle Finger Monday," not by a long shot. but, at least y'all can download this glistening pop gem by Twin Twelve, "Everything Good." i've been humming the chorus all day, just ask CC, and i'll most likely be dreaming about it all night. take a listen.

Be More Like Duff

yes, one of those things you wouldn't expect me to say, and you may be a hilary-hater. but hilary duff is stepping up, donating $250K to help out Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. good job, hilary. you get some props.
Your Civic Duty
i saw this picture today on DCist. how can i resist posting it?

Angie Aparo

yes, i know i'm hyper-punctual. but i just wanted to tell you, cus i'm so excited. Angie Aparo is playing IOTA w/ his backing band, The Infidels, Thursday, September 8th. he's an amazing vocalist, and he expecially kicks some ass when he's got some bandage behind him. check out his song, "Shine On," over in my MP3 Bunch of the Month column...
Keepin' Up With The Kids

in case you're having trouble understanding street slang (like Dan), just go to this urban dictionary and improve your vocabulary...
