Friday Night Lights
i went and saw Matt Nathanson at the 9:30 Club this past Friday. opening up was Charlotte Martin - and Charlotte Martin was good. although she played a very short set, her immense vocal talent easily shined through - usually it was coupled with her percussive piano stylings (kind of like a less jazzy Fiona Apple). her songs were good enough, and any shortcomings were made up for by her strong stage presence, even though it's tough to communicate with the audience from a piano bench.
matty put on a kick ass show, as usual. this was the first time i've seen him with a full band - i've seen him solo, and i've seen him w/ matt fish (cellist) - and they rocked.
i'm exhausted right now - i'll have to get back to this...

Reserve Now!
interested in going to space? richard branson is taking reservations now for flights aboard his soon-to-be-built commercial spaceship. the cost seems relatively reasonable.

ER Wrap
Well, obsessive-compulsive doctor intern ran out of the ER in a huff, turning the doorknob five times and leaving a space for Neela to get a promotion from hot dog jockey to chest-cracker. That was a long sentence, but it was worth it for abby, cause now she won’t have to subsidize Neela’s slackerism anymore! Susan returns with a bad dye job and a new position - ER chief – so let her reign begin! Deb “jing-mei” Chen also returned to have brain damaged Pratt saw off her cast – and to dis his driving skills. Carter gets reminded by Weaver that he likes pain killers and things that make you feel good, while Luka gets reminded that he doesn’t have enough storyline in this episode. Oh, and Ansbaugh makes an surprise appearance to help finish booting Corday back to jolly old England (blimey!). now bespectacled “dustin hoffman” doctor can complete his evil plan to take over as he only surgeon on staff in the entire hospital. Good luck.

ER – Fourth of July (in October)
Luka wears sunglasses at night…in the hospital…while he’s sleeping. He’s cool. Though it would have even better if he wore them while operating. The prodigal Dr. Lewis returns w/ blonde hair and a wife named Chuck. Carter? Still moping. Just pop some oxycontin already so Dr. Benton can come back and save your sorry ass! Unfortunately, Pratt hasn’t obviously suffered brain damage – just the “headaches of foreshadowing.” And Neela is now working at the Quickie-Mart, sinking ER-writer-slacking to a new low. Abby gleefully wields power over the poor rocker doctor, who wears vintage t-shirts and literally lives in the hospital. and i believe it's bye-bye Corday next week - who needs surgeons, anyway?

The Pitchfork Scoop on Nirvana Box Set
not that i really love nirvana, but...
Aaron Mandel reports:It would be nice to be able to tell you, a mere month or so away from its release, that we know exactly what will be on the upcoming Nirvana box set. We can't. However, there are some stirrings behind the curtain, as NME has recently confirmed both the release date, title, and some other details for the three-CD/one-DVD set. Entitled With the Lights Out, the much-anticipated gathering of the band's unreleased output will be released in the US on November 23rd, and according to NME, 68 of the box's 81 tracks are previously unreleased. Which is a whole damn lot.
While Universal is staying tightlipped about the actual tracklist of With the Lights Out, NME reports that the 68 unreleased tracks will consist of "rehearsals, outtakes, Kurt's home demos." Two years ago, Novoselic's description of the set as it then stood was, "KAOS radio 1987, BBC Peel Sessions, studio outtakes, sessions that we did in north Seattle, Rio de Janeiro, In Utero outtakes, live stuff..." In fact, Universal has not even elaborated on whether the 13 tracks of the box that have seen prior release will be a greatest-hits type thing, as so many box-set assemblers feel the need to include, or whether they are now out-of-print B-sides.
Meanwhile, the DVD will contain "unreleased band home movies, live footage, rehearsal footage and 20 full-length video performances," including footage of the band covering Terry Jacks' maudlin 70s tearjerker "Seasons in the Sun". A limited edition version of the box set that also includes video of a 1987 Nirvana concert had been rumored in the past, but it's no longer clear if that's happening (and if it's not, whether the show is being added to the DVD in the standard package).
At any rate, the box's title and release date are now confirmed (Brits get it a day earlier, on November 22nd), and Amazon.com lists the damn thing at $59.99. Even in the heyday of Nirvana bootlegging, listing 68 tracks that truly deserved an official release would have been hard for a lot of collectors, and we're not knocking Nirvana, who barely released that many songs the first time around, by saying so. Either Universal Music is sitting on a treasure trove of tapes that we really haven't heard, or they're about to drop a serious filler bomb.
One other question is whether the box will contain "You Know You're Right". The song-- suspected by many to be about Courtney Love-- was Nirvana's last studio recording, and a court fight with Love over who owned it derailed original plans for the Nirvana box set three years ago. It ended up making its debut in 2002 as the only rare track on the 2003 anthology Nirvana. So, like, you don't own it, but your 13-year-old neighbor does. Is that fair? Hell no. With any luck, come November 23rd you can show that brat what being a true fan Nirvana means. Or you'll have 11 alternate takes of "Pennyroyal Tea". Either way. - Pitchfork

On November 16th, PEARL JAM will release their first greatest hits compilation, Rearviewmirror (Greatest Hits 1991-2003). The double-CD will feature thirty-three tracks, including sixteen Top Ten hits, remixes of songs off their blockbuster 1991 debut Ten and their cover of Wayne Cochran's hit "Last Kiss." The Greatest of the Wu
The WU-TANG CLAN will release Legend of the Wu-Tang: Wu-Tang Clan's Greatest Hits on October 26th. The sixteen-track CD does not touch on the group member's loads of solo material but includes plenty off of 1993's break-out Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers). -Rolling Stone

Former NL MVP Ken Caminiti, Dead at 41
former Padres MVP Ken Caminiti died at age 41 this weekend of a heart attack. an admitted steroid-user, he was one of the first players of the 80s and 90s to come clean about his own use and the (supposed) rampant use in major league baseball. perhaps his untimely death will serve as a warning to indecisive minor leaguers everywhere...

Wed
wow, my knee is quite swollen right now. i just got back to my mom's house after spending the day in NYC for my high school friend Mike's wedding. tired? yes, it's 12:48. sore? yes, i traversed over 30 blocks, roaming the streets of NYC, taking it all in. i haven't been there in like a year, and it was good to visit. when i popped out of penn station, the lights and action of NYC hit me like a ton of bricks. DC really doesn't compare with it. of course, DC has charms all its own.
anyway, the ceremony was held in central park, in a beautiful little secluded garden with the requisite fountain and hedgerow. luckily, the foreboding clouds held their collective tongues, and didn't decide to pour buckets of rain down on us. we all then took school buses to the reception at etoile. funny, i had figured i'd never set foot in a school bus again...
anyway, the reception at etoile was a good time - i got to hang out with some friends from high school that i don't get to see too often, which was cool. i know a bunch of my friends' friends that were there, which made the crowd a bit more familiar. we got some catching up done, and a bunch of quality football talk and analysis. good pick on the restaurant - the food was good, and the band was tastefully grooving the jazzy stuff - the atmosphere kind of felt like one where rat pack would have felt quite comfy. and each table had a big bowlful of different kinds of nuts - and not just your run-of-the-mill peanuts - these were maple sugar glazed walnuts and pecans, and then chocolate covered almonds (?) and hazelnuts (?) - my, i must say, these were soooo tasty.
aight, i think that's enough - i've got to go to sleep, cus tomorrow i'll be driving back down to crystal city, and hopefully i'll be able to fit some football in!
