Back In Town

yep, that's right, the Montreal Expos are moving to Washington, DC - am i excited? well, when they were considering building a stadium practically next door to me in crystal city many months ago, i wasn't keen on the idea... but a team playing in DC with a venue that's metro-accessible? well, now that i'm much more tolerant of riding the metro, i'm kind of excited! let the naming proess begin!!!

ar

Ummm...Where's the Rock?

well, it's late (at least for me), and i just got back from seeing Joseph Arthur at a packed IOTA with ankur. overall? i was disappointed. the opening act was some new york chick who seemed to be wearing some kind of blonde shag wig - she actually had a pretty decent, breathy, jazzy voice, but unfortunately, her guitar and keyboard skills just weren't up to speed. and come to think of it, neither was a good deal of her songwriting. yeah, i'm a bit bitter - but hey, i spent $12, so i have a right to some complaining...

as for joseph arthur...i've only listened to a songs on a couple of his albums (i have a mix CD), and i didn't know too much about his live show. his lyrics are extremely dark, and his songs can be quite percussive and edgy. so i was looking forward to seeing a tortured artist come on stage with a band and rock his inner demons out.

unfortunately, there was no band, only the previous new york chick playing a metallic gold violin and singing backup while JA played guitar. at least joseph arthur brought one of those fancy rock box things that will loop lines that you play right after you play them (vocal, guitar, guitar percussion) - did that make any sense? - so that made for some interesting arrangements. some songs worked, with the magic box allowing them to build to a nice crescendo. and two of his best numbers this evening were of the quiet, melancholy kind. but for the most part, his show pretty much floated out there, vocally and instrumentally, never really coalescing into tight songs. not worth the price of admission. stick to his studio work.

Chained

i've recently been listening to Alice in Chains for the first time, based on my roommate, Ankur's recommendation. i like what i've been hearing so far of "Jar of Flies" and "Unplugged." the band achieves a very dark sound and mood with down tunings and lower harmonies, yet they're not lacking in melody and hooks - quite the contrary. Jerry Cantrell's guitar work is excellent, and his melodic leads balance out the haunting, almost dirge-like vocals of Layne Staley. i'm looking forward to hearing "Dirt."

Hero's Ladder

i saw two movies this weekend so far - one in the theatre (Hero), and one on VHS (Jacob's Ladder). i went into "Hero" expecting "Crouching Tiger" redux, and it was difficult to leave that expectation at home, especially once the flying battle sequences began. but as the movie progressed, it began to develop a beauty of its own. "Hero" is a visually stunning movie, using bold colors as well as the lack of color to great effect. fight scenes are well-choreographed, and take place in the anti-gravity universe made so popular by "Crouching Tiger" and "The Matrix." additionally, the plot/story is quite good, and the moral lessons and understated romance almost hold their own with the visuals. this is definitely a movie worth going to the theatre for.

if i'm feeling ambitious, i'll write my piece on Jacob's Ladder later...
