Juiced Movies
US sprinter Jerome Young was found guilty of doping five years ago and will be stripped of his Olympic gold medal. of course, Young denies any wrongdoing. every athlete that tests positive inevitably denies it - are these drug tests that inaccurate that every positive is wrong? i don't think so. how refreshing would it be for an athlete to just say, "yep, i was juicing. yeah, it was illegal, but look how big my biceps are now!!!!"
you can vote for your top 25 sports movies of all time here - you know you want to put Rudy #1!

Various Bits
here's a list and evaluation of all HOF running backs - it's quite interesting to compare the different backs' average yards per carry figures
well, the new marah CD is almost out - when the 30th rolls around, i'll be placing my amazon order (no shipping and no tax!) for it, along with ER Season Two on DVD - i can't wait!
interestingly enough, the Gallows Road (VA) DMV was found to have been guilty of fraudulent practices - the government decided to remedy the situation by invalidating all the transactions that took place there for the past several years - unfortunately, that would include the transfer of my driver's license from NJ to VA - jeff is not pleased

Much Ado
TLC wants to finda new member to replace the deceased Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes. That’s hard enough to swallow, but they’re going to go about via a reality show...ugh. Now if the new member’s name has no “L” in it, will they still keep the moniker?
Eric Clapton continues his guitar fire sale, selling his famed, "Blackie" for a wad of cash.
oh, the 90s are coming, baby!!!

Wet Guitars
i just got back from swimming in my apartment's olympic-sized pool - it's the first time i've ever actually used it during my 2(?) years here - it's pretty cool, i must admit. i thought i could get some cardio exercise without my knees giving me some grief. so far, no comments from the joints.
did you ever wonder if eric clapton has any guitars left? between his last auction and this one, he seems to be selling everything he has...

The Quick, the Dead, and the Identical
i'm glad yahoo is increasing the capacity of my mailbox. really. but i'd be even happier if it was working today. an extended outage of email leads to one really, really stuffed inbox.
here's a neat article comparing the best/fastest fastballs of all time
for all of those people who were singing along with INXS on "Devil Inside" back in the 80s (and those of you who still are), you may get your chance to do it for real. "survivor" guru Mark Burnett's latest creation, "Rock Star," will give one lucky winner the chance to record vocals on INXS's new album. Michael Hutchence would be turning over in his grave if he knew about this.
when you were listening to nickelback (yeah, you know you've listened to 'em!), did you ever get the feeling that all of their songs sounded the same? take a listen to this comparison of a couple of nickelback songs - at the same time!
thanks to casper for the tip...

Sympathy for the Potter
Here's a neat little article on Salon about the lyrics to the Rolling Stones' "Sympathy for the Devil."
well, i finally saw "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban." it was good, yes, although not as good as the first two. there was a lot of action that took place outside the cozy confines of Hogwarts - and it just seemed to lack the intimacy and magic atmosphere that the castle provides. kind of like "Cheers" episodes that took place outside the bar. themes are darker in this movie, and this is reflected in harry potter himself. but the new director handled some difficult material relatively well. and once again, it felt so good to be whisked away into the magic world of harry potter and his friends.

Scrub Music
i just caught a rerun of one of my favorite "Scrubs" episodes tonight (the one with Brendan Fraser) - the first time i saw it, i remember liking the delicate elliott smith-esque acoustic song at the end of the episode. i had wanted to find out who sang it, but i never followed up on it the first time, but this time i did. it was josh radin's "winter," and you can listen to it here...

Blown and Fruity
ever want to have some blowfish, but declined because you were afraid an incompetent chef might leave a little lethal poison inside it? well, you can breathe easy, because scientists claim to have raised poisonless blowfish here...
it's hard to pick out the best fruit at the supermarket, and i often have no idea exactly for what characteristics i need to look. but here's a guide on how to select the best summer fruit...

Is There A Surgeon In The House?
ER has been steadily declining in its quality level - and it continues its descent with the dismissal of Alex Kingston (Elizabeth Corday). Her contract will not be renewed after this season. It seems that the writers have just decided it's not worth the time to write the established characters accurately (hello, Dr. Weaver), and that they're better off just dumping them (hello, Dr. Romano). Funny, looks like there's no more surgeons at County General.

Stone Temple Roses
here's a link to the rolling stone review of Velvet Revolver's new album - in case you didn't know, the band is made up of former Stone Temple Pilots frontman Scott Weiland and ex Gunners Slash, Duff, and Matt Sorum - and then another guitarist, Dave, who wasn't in anything.

AR/DF/C
i just got back from seeing the Adam Richman, Dean Fields, Carroway show at jamming java. ten dollars, which was a bit steep, but I came out satisfied. ar opened up with a typical ar set – loud, acoustic guitar w/ funky chords, emotive lyrics, and a voice that people either like or dislike – there usually is no in between. Anyway, I’m one of the people that likes it, and I enjoyed the chance to talk to adam before the show and then listen to a set of material from the new cd, though I have seen adam play a stronger show.
Dean Fields went on second, and didn’t maintain the momentum. With a Tobey Maguire-like demeanor, Fields has a good voice, kind of like a mix of John Ondrasik and Aaron Neville – unfortunately, he lacked an edge in his lyrics and playing, and I would have enjoyed a few more tasty hooks.
but my discovery of the night was Carroway (my first time seeing ‘em) – they came up on stage, full band, electric, and rocked the place back to life with an extremely tight performance. the lead singer’s voice is strong and distinctive in a good way, and fits their sound – rock w/ a tinge of alt-country. everyone in the band contributes to vocals, and their harmony and backing arrangements are right where I wanted them to be. i was pleased.
